Thermostat with 2nd stage timer My previous thermostat had some kind of mysterious computer that decided when the 2nd stage heat should turn on, but it didn’t work very well. The heat pump would run for hours on a cold night and blow cool air around the house, which would keep the thermostat satisfied but not the occupants. So like other people do, I would switch to emergency heat on cold nights, and that really runs up the power bill, because there is no benefit from the heat pump.
